Whether you live in the London area or are planning a bit of a visit to the capital, one activity both locals and tourists should put on their ‘things to do’ list is a dinner or lunch cruise on the river. You get a completely different viewpoint when you see London from the river Thames and it’s one that shouldn’t be missed.
You can enjoy a Thames dinner cruise in London at any time of the year. If you go in summertime, you can spend a balmy summer’s evening onboard and if you go in winter you get to see the sights all lit up at night. You can also go for a lunch cruise, which is perfect if you’re just in town for the day.
All dinner and lunch cruises are offered as vouchers, which makes them ideal for giving as gifts, as there’s no need to book a date in advance. We think the best way to enjoy the capital is to go push the boat out (excuse the pun!) and go for the Elite dinner cruise, as you are guaranteed a window seat and the city does look stunning by night.
Don’t take our word for how much fun these river cruises can be though, have a browse of Trip advisor on Thames cruises and see what previous guests onboard the boats have to say. Some guests have even taken the time to upload photos of their trip, so you can see real images of what it’s like on the day. Although there are some less positive comments on there, the general consensus seems to be that it’s a great choice for a romantic meal for two.
For those who aren’t looking for a sit down meal but still want to see the sights from the water, or simply get from one place to the other in the capital on the water, ferry boats are where it’s at.
Thames Clippers provides various boat services for both commuters and tourists. If you’re going to an event at the 02 Arena there are special departures from Greenwich North directly to the venue, so you don’t have to get stuck in traffic driving there. The company is also providing a river bus service during the 2012 Olympics Games to carry passengers up and down the Thames to event locations – much more environmentally friendly and practical than taking the car and prettier views than in the Underground! All the boats they use are modern, high-speed catamarans that are comfy, spacious and fast.
If you want to see the Thames but a little further up stream, there is a pleasure boat service in the Reading area that runs from Caversham to visit Mapledurham House and Watermill, before returning back to Caversham. The trip is a great day out for all the family and gets you away from the bustling city, as the Thames becomes a gently winding river surrounded by countryside. River cruise tickets to visit the Elizabethan stately home on the Mapledurham estate, cost from just £25 for a family of four.
